Stage Description

Today we have the queens stage to look forward to. The start is in the town Teplice and the finish is across the border in Atlenberg, Germany. For one day we leave the Central Bohemian Highlands and enter the Ore Mountains and that mean some serious climbing. The fist part of the stage is still rather flat, but at about 50 kilometers into the stage the road turns up. At that point the riders will start climbing towards Mikulov to reach the GPM at kilometer 60 at the Vitiška hut. The peloton will enjoy this section once more as the race loops back. Then the riders will head towards Altenberg for the finish. After yesterdays stage 2b Hugo Tuomire holds the yellow jersey. He has an advantage of only eight seconds.

Start and finish towns

Teplice is a SPA town in the north of Bohemia located in a large valley between the Central Bohemian Highlands and enter the Ore Mountains. The town has about 50 thousand inhabitants and is 40 km from Litoměřice. Before the second world war is was sometimes referred to as „Small Paris“ for its architecture and cultural life. A curious fact is that the only ever encounter between Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Wolfgang Goethe happened in the garden of the local chateau.

Altenberg is a town in the east of Saxony, on the border with the Czech republic. It has 8 thousand inhabitants. In the surrounding Ore Mountains there are many kilometers of hiking trails and cycling routes. During the summer season the region is a host to many sport events, for instance the Mad East Challenge, the Kohlhau Mountain Cup or the Kohlhau Team Marathon. During the winter the main sport is cross country skiing. There is a bobsled track here as well, which will host the 2020 world championships. Many international competitions are organized around the Sparkassen-Arena Osterzgebirge.
